RiverValley Behavioral Health Children’s Hospital is an 80-bed, private, not-for-profit inpatient psychiatric hospital licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, and affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Center for Autism.
Located on a scenic 40-acre campus in Owensboro, Kentucky, our 70,000 sq. ft. facility provides a safe and supportive environment where children and adolescents can begin their journey toward healing.

We serve children and adolescents ages 5–17 who are experiencing emotional, behavioral, or psychiatric challenges. Every child receives individualized, trauma-informed care designed to help them build coping skills, strengthen resilience, and thrive at home, in school, and in the community.
Comprehensive Inpatient Psychiatric Care
What to Expect:
Each patient’s treatment plan is developed by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, and behavioral health specialists. Our inpatient program offers:
- Acute Psychiatric Inpatient Services for crisis stabilization
- Individual, group, and family therapy
- Specialized therapeutic activities
- Medication evaluation and management
- 24/7 nursing care and crisis support
- Discharge and aftercare planning
- Specialized therapies, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Behavioral Intervention Services with a focus on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Recreational therapies, including music and art in partnership with the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art
Walk-In & Direct Referral Clinic:
Our 24/7/365 Walk-In Clinic ensures that families can access immediate psychiatric support when it’s needed most. Each child receives:
- A comprehensive assessment by a trained psychiatric provider
- Medication evaluation when appropriate
- Referrals for continued treatment or community resources
No appointment is necessary. We’re here for you and your family when you need it most.

The BIRCH Program

The BIRCH program is a specialized long-term treatment program for high-acuity adolescents. Developed in partnership with and funded by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services, this first-of-its-kind program in Kentucky serves male adolescents ages 12–17 who require 6–9 months of intensive, trauma-informed treatment.
Program Highlights
- Individualized, developmentally appropriate therapy
- Skill-building for self-regulation, communication, and problem-solving
- Family engagement and caregiver support
- Structured recreational and therapeutic activities
- Psychiatric management and trauma-informed relational care (MANDT model)
BIRCH helps youth who have struggled in previous placements or experienced repeated crises build confidence, stability, and hope for the future.
Referrals to the BIRCH Program come directly and exclusively through the Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services. Families and community providers seeking placement must work with CHFS to initiate and coordinate the referral process.
